Co-op isn't a burden. It's the best part.

One of a handful of co-op elementary schools in the U.S.

Co-op schooling has been around since the early 1900s. KapKa is one of only a handful of co-op elementary schools in the U.S., from kindergarten through fifth grade.

KapKa's co-op model leverages the community's time and skills, layered onto the incredible education KapKa students receive from teachers. Thanks to the cooperative, we keep our tuition one of the lowest in the area for a non-parochial independent school.

Fun fact: KapKa asks less of families than some schools require in volunteer hours.
We didn't specifically search for a co-op, but have been so happy with KapKa and surprised by how manageable and fun the co-op hours have been.

How it works in practice

Each family ends up with their own co-op schedule. Options include: a daytime shift (1–3hrs/week), evenings or weekends projects/teams, supporting events or trips, and community service. Extended family and family friends are welcome too.
Each year you commit to a set number of co-op hours, with three levels to choose from. Hours accrue for everything from organizing a meal train to helping with the website to supporting a small reading group.
Lower time commitment levels are offset by a financial contribution. Every year is different, and having flexibility allows for changing lives. 95% of our families choose the largest time commitment — and find real meaning in it.
We take time to learn how you want to show up, your availability, and your strengths. Co-op isn't one-size-fits-all.

Co-op gives back tenfold

Families tell us, year after year, that the time they spend supporting KapKa comes back to them tenfold. You know your child's teachers. You know the other families. Maybe it's the kid-whisperer skill you pick up from a teacher. Maybe it's the adult friendships, years later, that you lean on as you navigate high school applications and beyond. KapKa is a place where not only the students, but the adults grow too.

KapKa is full of joy and love and friendliness. You see kids truly enjoying their time at school — and this is how the world should be.
